Features to consider Before Purchasing a Stroller
Stroller manufacturers tout many features in their advertising, and space prohibits us from including all of them in our table. A few words are necessary about some of the features we have highlighted.
Manufacturer – We recommend choosing a stroller from one of the larger and older stroller manufactures as they have the most experience building strollers the right way. The strollers in our Buyer’s Guide are all manufactured by well-established companies which are more than fifty years old.
Weight – During the 2 to 3 year period you use your stroller you will lift it, move it, carry it, fold it and unfold it hundreds of times, so the weight of the stroller becomes very important.
Maximum Load – This number is the weight of your passenger plus the weight of the other cargo you put in it, like bottles, diaper bag, food, drinks, etc.
Wheel Type – Most stroller wheels have either air-filled tires or EVA tires. Air-filled tires provide a more cushioned ride and handle bumps better, but they also weigh more and require maintenance. EVA tires are lighter and maintenance-free, but don’t provide as smooth a ride.
5 Point Harness – Safety is the number one consideration in your stroller selection, and you should make sure the stroller you buy has a five point safety harness. Some of the lightweight strollers do not have them. Some of the best strollers have a latch-release that require pressure on both sides (a squeeze) to open the harness, so your baby can’t open it accidentally.
Parent-Facing Option – It is well-known that newborns and infants much prefer to have a view of their parent instead of a view of what is in front of them. But as they grow that preference usually changes. More and more strollers now offer both a front view for older children and a parent view for younger passengers. Two stoller manufacturers who offer the parent facing option on their strollers are Stokke (all) and Quinny (some).
